Overview:

 

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology MMMC  has an illustrious history since its inception in 2000 ,and is one of the departments within the Faculty of Medicine comprising of all the sub-specialities within the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. . The outstanding clinical leadership continues to this day, and the Department through an integrated medical campus  proudly trains medical students  to be the finest  houseofficers  and this has been confirmed by the excellent feedback by the respective hospitals  OBGNY heads and  administrators  throughout the Nation.It is committed to research and development and subscribes to the vision and mission of the University.

 

Vision:

 

The Vision of the Department is to become the Medical institution of excellence which provides leadership in the activities of Obstetrical and Gynaecological  in education , training, research, new development, spread and the provision of service in the domain of Obstetrics and gynaecology  and all the specialties associated with it.

 

Mission:

 

The Department views its mission at the undergraduate programme  as being obligated  with the responsibility  through its medical undergraduate instructional programme of preparing the potential graduate to take up  duties and responsibility  in the provision of medical care to the community throughout the nation and to be able to function within the national health care service system effectively and efficiently.

 

Goals of the course:

 

  1.  To enable  students to utilise  the basic and clinical sciences in medical decision making process.This is designed to build upon students’ knowledge of the basic sciences and prepare them for the clinical clerkship in medicine. The course integrates pathophysiology with clinical medicine, and is taught using case studies.
  2. to familiarise students with the most common and important Obstetrics and Gynaecological illnesses to help students prepare for clinical encounters of patients by providing the basis  for understanding  obstetrics & gynaecological  disorders and principles of  assessment and management..
  3. To teach students to think critically about concepts relevant to medical decision making, including diagnostic reasoning,aetiology, prognosis and survival, therapies and studies of their effectiveness.
  1. Appreciate the importance of effective communication to both patients and physicians.
  2. Understand the importance of patient and physician factors and how these affect the treatment of a disease.
  3. Appreciate that the practice of medicine is a lifelong learning process, with continuing refinement of skill in procedures and patient communication.
  4. To foster appreciation for the fact that obstetrics and gynaecological illnesses are commonly encountered in all medical practice, and early detection and treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes.
